We are proud to share the story of Bustillos Construction—a company built on hard work, resilience, and the vision of one extraordinary man: Rafael Bustillos Sr.
Long before founding the company, Rafael Sr. came to the United States in pursuit of a better future. Like many immigrants, he arrived with determination and a dream—to provide for his family and build something lasting. He began his journey as a laborer, worked his way up to superintendent, and in 2001, took a leap of faith to establish Bustillos Construction—rooted in the values of perseverance, craftsmanship, and integrity.
Launching the business came with its share of obstacles: language barriers, licensing challenges, and the impact of the 2008 recession, which tested the company's strength and resolve. But through it all, Rafael Sr. laid a foundation that would carry forward—both in concrete and in family.
Today, that legacy is led by the next generation. Venus Barraza, Rafael’s daughter and Chief Executive Officer, has transformed Bustillos Construction into a competitive, growth-oriented company. With over 13 years of experience and a background in business and accounting, she has expanded the company’s services, modernized its operations, and set a clear course for long-term sustainability and impact.
Standing beside her is Rafael Bustillos Martinez, her brother and co-owner, who is stepping confidently into his leadership role. With over a decade of hands-on experience, Rafael leads field operations with precision, reliability, and a deep connection to the trade—and to the values instilled by their father. As he grows in his leadership and voice, Rafael is becoming an essential part of the company’s present and future.
Together, Venus and Rafael represent the strength of family, the power of shared vision, and the evolution of a company that honors its roots while building toward something greater.
Honoring the Past, Building the Future
In [2014], Rafael’s daughter Venus came to work in the business. When she joined the business, Venus brought with her experience she’d gained working at other construction companies. Together, we streamlined processes, improved operations, and strengthened the foundation her dad had created. Her dad always taught them to be honorable—to own our mistakes, fix them, and always stand by our work. That’s why every job we complete comes with a one-year warranty. We’re not just there during the project—we’re there long after it’s done.
One of our proudest achievements was completing apartment complexes using ICF construction. It was a massive undertaking and a steep learning curve, but it proved what we’re capable of. Even seasoned builders told us it was unlike anything they’d accomplished. That’s the kind of pride we bring to every project.
Looking ahead, Venus' vision for Bustillos Construction is to reach new heights. We want to be a company that represents resilience, determination, and excellence. As a minority-owned business, we’ve faced every challenge imaginable—and we’ve overcome them. It’s about creating a legacy, not just for my father, but for everyone who’s ever believed in us.
Her dad’s saying, “As concha,” means “Relax. It’s okay. Bad things happen, and they’ll keep happening—but we’ll get through it.” That mindset has carried us through every challenge and will continue to guide us forward.
